二.范文赏析

第一部分

1.Do you often travel by train?

Yes I do. I mean, I’d say I travel by train at least once a month. Because I have a brother living in Shanghai, and there’s a high-speed train running from here to there, so I always take it whenever I go to see him.

2. What do you usually do when (you are) traveling by train?

What do I usually do? Um… well, most of the time, I just take a book with me to read on the train, cos you know, I’m a bit of a bookworm. And I might also listen to some music on my iPhone as well, especially if I’m traveling on my own. So yeah, that’s pretty much all I do, and I know it’s not a lot, but I’m not usually on the train for that long, you know, probably only about an hour or so.

Notes

there’s a train running = there’s a train in operation

that’s pretty much all I do – 我做的差不多就这些

3. What do you think are the benefits of traveling by train?

Well for me, I’d say one of the biggest benefits is that, with trains, you pretty much know exactly what time you’ll arrive somewhere. Because I mean, unlike cars and buses, you won’t get stuck in traffic if you go by train. So unless your train is delayed, which doesn’t happen a lot here, you should be able to get where you wanna go on time.

So that’s one thing, and as well as this, I’d say another good thing about traveling by train is that you can get up and move around during the journey, which isn’t really possible if you’re in a car! So I think this makes traveling by train a bit more comfortable and enjoyable than a lot of other forms of transport.

Other benefits:

It’s often very convenient traveling by train because the stations are usually quite central, as opposed to airports, which tend to be quite far out. So I think taking a train is a good alternative to flying.

You pretty much know…… - 你差不多知道……

Wanna = want to (spoken English)

Get stuck in traffic – 堵在路上

As opposed to – 和……相反

第二部分:

Ok right then, well the person that I’d like to talk about is one of my university coursemates called Nick, because he’s honestly one of the smartest people I know. And we’ve been friends ever since I started university, because I found myself sitting next to him in our first lecture, and we (kind of) just got talking.

As for what kind of person he is, well, um, I guess the best way to describe him would be sociable and likeable, coz I mean, although he’s a super smart guy, he’s not arrogant in the slightest, and he gets on well with pretty much everyone in my year.

Anyway, moving onto why I think he’s intelligent, well first of all, he always does really well in all our exams, you know, like coming top or second in most of them. And what’s amazing is that he doesn’t seem to study (all) that hard, but still manages to do so well. For example, as well as studying, he’s also got a part-time job, which I’m sure must take up quite a bit of his time. So it ‘s really impressive how he’s able to do this without it affecting his studies whatsoever.

And another thing is that whenever the lecturer asks a question, he always knows the answer, and sometimes he’ll just whisper it to me because he feels a bit embarrassed to answer every time!

So yeah, I’d say he’s a really clever guy, and I feel very lucky to have such a good friend.

Notes:

I found myself – 我不知不觉的

he’s not arrogant in the slightest – 他一点都不自大

pretty much everyone = 差不多所有人

he doesn’t seem to study that hard, but still manages to do so well – 他好像不是那么用功学习的,但还是能做得很好。

So it ‘s really impressive – here, “impressive” means 了不起

…without it affecting his studies whatsoever. – 一点都不影响他的学习。

(At university, we often say “lecturer” instead of “teacher”)

That’s about it then = 大概就这些

I’d say = I think

He’s always been able to help me whenever I’ve had any difficulties with my studies.

第三部分

1. Is competitive sport very popular in your country?

Yeah, I’d say it is. You know, if you look on TV for example, you get competitive sports shown the whole time, especially basketball, and then on the school level, it’s very common for classes to compete against each other in various sports. So yeah, I think this kind of shows that competitive sport is pretty popular.

2. In your opinion, how beneficial to society is competitive sport?

Well I’m not really all that sure to be honest, but I suppose it’s fair to say that it is pretty beneficial, because if you think about it, competitive sport is really a kind of entertainment for people, you know, it (just) adds something more to people’s lives. So if we didn’t have it, I’m sure you’d agree that our life would be a lot more dull as a result.

Notes:

it’s fair to say = you could say (可以说)

if you think about it = 如果你想想看

3. Do you think competitions are good for children to take part in?

Yeah I do, but only to an extent. You know, competitions are usually quite fun, and they can help children develop a sense of teamwork, which is good of course. But they can also add pressure and anxiety to children if they’re not organized in the right way.

And also I think, in the end, really the most important thing is not trying to be better than other people, but rather trying to be the best you can be. So in other words, competing against yourself and always pushing yourself further, I think, is essentially the most important thing to grasp. And we don’t really need competitions to do that, they’re just one way of motivating us to develop and improve ourselves.

Notes:

be the best you can be = 做最好的自己

essentially = 本质上
