Part 1: Maps

1.Do you ever use a map?

Yeah I do. I mean, I often use a GPS when I’m driving somewhere that I’m not familiar with, and I find it super helpful, because I don’t have a very good sense of direction!

2.Who taught you to use a map?

I don’t actually think anyone taught me how to use a map, you know, I kind of just figured it out by myself. And I’ve never really had a problem understanding them because they tend to be pretty self-explanatory.

3.Do you prefer to use electronic maps or those made of paper?

I’d say I generally prefer using electronic ones, because they basically have more functions. For example, if you’re not sure how to get somewhere, electronic maps will be able to actually highlight the best route to take, which is something that paper maps can’t really do.

Notes:

GPS – 导航仪 (it stands for Global Positioning System, but in spoken English, we just say GPS.

Part 2

Describe your first mobile phone.

You should say:

When you got it

How you got it

What you used it for

And explain how you felt when you got it.

Ok right then, I’m gonna tell you a little bit about my first mobile phone, or at least as much as I can remember anyway, because I think it was about seven or eight years ago when I first got one, so my memory’s a bit sketchy.

Anyway, in terms of how I came to getting my first mobile, well basically, I had kind of been going on at my mum for quite a while to get me one, but she kept saying that I was too young and didn’t really need one. But when I hit the age of about 15, she finally relented, and took me to the shops to choose one.

So uh, yeah, I remember at the time that neither of us knew much about mobiles, so when we walked into the shop, we just asked the sales assistant there to recommend us one. And I think I’m right in saying that we ended up choosing the cheapest and most basic phone they had, simply because I wasn’t really interested in having loads of functions, you know, all I wanted to use it for was to call and text people.

I took pretty good care of it, I even spent, like, 200 rmb on a leather case to go around it, and it lasted a pretty long time. I think I used it for something like 3 or four years before moving on to a better one. And I think I’ve still got it stored in a drawer somewhere at home. So uh, yeah that’s it.

Notes:

1.Vague = 模糊的; (思想上)不清楚的; (表达或感知)含糊的; 昧的

2.Sketchy =不完全的,不充分的

3.Relented = here it means: 让步;变宽厚;温和;心 If you relent, you allow someone to do something that you had previously refused to allow them to do

4.going on at = pestering,

5.hit = reached

6.loads of = lots of (spoken English)

Part 3

1. Do Chinese people spend much money on clothes?

Yeah, I’d say they do, at least everyone I know does anyway! And one of the reasons is that clothes are (so) ridiculously expensive nowadays! I mean, just for a normal pair of jeans, the price is probably around three or four hundred RMB, which is quite a sizeable proportion of many people’s income. So yeah, I think it’s true to say that people here in China spend quite a lot (of money) on clothes.

2. Do you think you can learn anything about a person from the clothes they wear?

I think you can learn a fair amount,if you see someone walking down the street in a suit, then I think it’s pretty safe to assume that they have an office job of some sort.

you can learn a fair amount = you can learn quite a lot

If you assume that something is true, you imagine that it is true, sometimes wrongly

3. Why do you think fashion seems to be constantly changing?

Well I think it’s pretty obvious, isn’t it! You know, the fashion houses that are instigating the changes are doing it to make more money! I mean, if fashion didn’t change so quickly, then people would feel less need to go out and buy more clothes. But as it is at the moment, people are buying stuff they don’t really need, just to keep up with the latest trends.

Instigate = cause something to happen发起

Latest trends =
