1. Do you like birthdays?

Yes, I like birthdays. When I was a child, I looked forward to the day since the beginning of a new year, for on the day every year, my Mum would cook a big meal for me and I could get lots of presents from my relatives. Now I celebrate my birthday with my friends at school when we have a dinner outside and go to KTV to enjoy the day.

2. Do people in China celebrate birthdays?

Yes, we do. Traditionally, people will give a birthday party for a child when he is one, ten and twenty years old; and for an old man on his/ her fifty, sixty and seventy, that's every ten years. On times like these, people will have a big family party when all the relatives are invited. Of course, people celebrate their birthdays every year, and they often have a big meal with his/ her parents or children.

3. Are any birthdays (reaching a certain age) especially important in your country?

Yes, the birthdays when one is twenty and fifty are much more important. When one reaches twenty, the age standing for one's being an adult in China, one needs to be responsible as he's no longer a child. While at the age of fifty, one becomes a member of the old, and his/her children should care more of their ageing parent.

4. How do Chinese people celebrate birthdays?

Chinese people would like to have a birthday party with their relatives and friends. On that day, people used to prepare a big meal at home for the guests, and it's just a day for guests to get together to relax. Nowadays, however, guests are invited to have dinner at restaurant where they may watch performances, like magic or singing organized to entertain the guests.

My favorite restaurant is on Nanhu street. I’m a regular there.

The restaurant is small…tiny, you know, not obvious at all until you pass it. But it offers a great selection of Chinese food. The chef is awesome. Just order some dishes there like Kong Pao chicken(宫保鸡丁) and braised pork（红烧肉） and you’ll understand what I mean. And the portion is so big.

But we’re attracted to this restaurant by more than just good food. The owner knows most customers on a first-name basis. The seats are comfortable. The waiters and waitresses are friendly and helpful. You can always count on them.      

Oh, by the way, the lighting in the restaurant is pretty and the background music is all laid-back pieces. It’s cozy, especially on a freezing winter day…

1. Where do Chinese people like to have lunch? What about dinner?

A lot of people now have fast food for lunch or eat at their company cafeterias. Most people prefer having dinner at home because they can cook delicious food by themselves and have more opportunities to spend time with their family members.  

2. Do you like to eat out or at home?

Eating out has many advantages. You don’t have to spend much time cooking. You can have a variety of food to choose from and the professional cooks will make your meal. Eating at home is also good because you can enjoy the cooking time and spend more time with your family.  

3. What kind of food is healthy？

I think it’s seafood because it contains a lot of vitamins and protein that can help us stay healthy. Of course, many vegetables also have a lot of nutrition. So we should have a balanced diet in order to keep healthy.  

4. How do most restaurants attract customers?

I think the most important way is to have good food. Apart from this, unique decoration, good quality service and reasonable price are also good elements for attracting customers.  

5. What kinds of restaurants are there in your country?

There’re many different kinds of restaurants. If we classify them by the food origins, there’re restaurants make dishes of different provinces in China, such as Sichuan food restaurants and Shanghai food restaurants. If we think about the standard, there’re very fancy restaurants and very low standard noodle restaurants.
