Some people say that the only reason for learning a foreign language is in order to travel or work in a foreign country. Others say that these are not the only reasons why someone should learn a foreign language. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Nowadays, with the prevalence of second language, nearly all secondary school students worldwide are obliged to learn a foreign language to keep up with the pace of the development of globalisation. The question about whether learning a foreign language is only to work or travel in other countries, however, remains controversial.
Those who think that studying a foreign language is to get used to the foreign countries so that people can travel and work in those countries might argue on the ground that the process of globalization is accelerating, hence the second language learning will adjust them to the environment of foreign culture and customs. The fast pace of globalization has resulted in the emergence of more and more multinational corporations which are interested in recruiting those who have can speak a second language. Therefore, students equipped with a second language are more competitive in job-hunting. Besides, when they are visiting some tourist attractions, people who have learnt about a foreign language is likely to have no obstacle in communicating with the local residents on living, eating or visiting.
However, some opponents point out that learning a foreign language is also beneficial culturally and economically. Firstly, learning a foreign language helps to tackle xenophobia. Negative stereotyping is sadly still prevalent in the modern world, which will lead to prejudice. Learning a foreign language is also a good way to combat prejudice because people who have access to other languages will be more open-minded towards other cultures so less likely to be xenophobic even towards other cultures whose language they have not learnt. Secondly, language learning can generate economic profits because a large number of employees, equipped with foreign language skills diminishing the misunderstanding of cultures of other countries, customs and habits, enhance the companies'abilities to engage in trade and to expand their business abroad, in turn enhancing exports.
Overall, foreign language leaning is crucial not only because it is indispensable to the individuals in terms of traveling or working in some foreign countries but also for its significant role in eliminating xenophobia and boosting a nation's economy.
